Traditional History

Do you know marriage traditions go back to prehistory? Initially, the brides were lifted by their ensuing hubby’s and shifted off to near-by villages where they treated the bride as their own property.

Sooner or later life in farming communities replaced the life in ravaging hordes with addition of man’s property- goat, pigs and cattle. Once the time ripened to include wife in his household, her acquisition was the same as for any other living property - the man traded for her.

This was strengthened by offering goats or cows for the daughter of another farmer. In some cultures, they may sought higher possessions for their daughter-in-laws by family.

As a deal to become trustworthy, a token was offered to seal the deal. Day-by-day that token turned into engagement ring. In ancient Egypt, a pair of gold bracelets had been worn by married women. This becomes smaller and finally finds it place as engagement ring.

Greeks prefer to wear gold wedding bands on the index finger and Indians preferred thumb. Only Romans identified that a vein in the ring finger of the left hand straight to heart. Most of them considered that wearing this ring in this finger house for wedding band.

There are times when the gold engagement ring is also the wedding ring. During the proposal the ring is worn in the left hand then it is shifted to the right hand during the wedding day.

During the 16th century there was a ring called the Irish Claddagh ring that had two hands flanking a crown which represents friendship, love and eternity. Such rings give respect to the bride. Such rings are worn as gold engagement rings during the wedding also.

Another gold engagement ring called the Gimmal meaning “joining” in Latin has three bands in it. Each of the bands is separated. One is worn by the bride, the other by the man, and the third one by the witness for the marriage.

During the ceremony all the three are combined and worn by the bride. Such gold engagement rings are the best tradition that can be followed.
